God in the Arts

In today’s Daily Guideposts, writer June Attaway shares her experience about going to the theatre with her fourteen year old daughter. They went to see Henrik Ibsen’s The Master Builder, a play Julia hadn’t read in decades (I don’t think I’ve read it at all). It’s about an aging architect who feels threatened that his young assistant will surpass him.

Julia doesn’t realize until the end of the second act that the real master builder is God. However, her teenage daughter, upon hearing the title of the play, from the get-go had thought it was only going to be about God!

Reading this reminded me of how often I thought the lyrics to a song were about one thing, but then realized God was the subject or God was speaking to the listener.

Take, for instance, “You’ve Got a Friend,” written by Carole King and performed by James Taylor. Here’s an excerpt:

When you're down and troubled
and you need a helping hand
and nothing, whoa nothing is going right.
Close your eyes and think of me
and soon I will be there
to brighten up even your darkest nights.

You just call out my name,
and you know wherever I am
I'll come running, oh yeah baby
to see you again.
Winter, spring, summer, or fall,
all you have to do is call
and I'll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You've got a friend.

I used to think this was about a close relationship between friends. But after I’d “come to believe,” it was suggested to me to think of it as being sung from God’s perspective. I tried it - and I loved it!

Here’s another set of lyrics excerpted from “Follow Me” by John Denver:

Follow me where I go, what I do, and who I know
Make it part of you to be a part of me
Follow me up and down, all the way and all around
Take my hand and say you’ll follow me.

Sounds like Spirit talking to me...

I love hearing God speak to me and since I have such a love of music and singing, I easily embrace and so enjoy hearing God’s messages through the musical word.

Literature, theatre, art, dance, music... God uses artisans as emissaries to spread His Word and to convey to us that we are not alone. How creative, how clever, how enjoyable. Thank You, Spirit!

A Single Prayer

I did some more inner child and gestalt work over this past weekend. Gestalt Therapy was developed by Fritz Perls and his wife Laura, in the 1940’s; their work emphasized a phenomenological and subjective approach to therapy.

Perls noted that many of us split off our experience (thoughts, sensations, emotions) that are uncomfortable. One goal of his work is to move people into owning their experience and developing into a healthy gestalt (or whole). In addition to helping the client overcome symptoms, the objective of Gestalt Therapy is to enable him or her to become more fully and creatively alive and to be free from the blocks and unfinished issues that may diminish optimum satisfaction, fulfillment, and growth.

I felt a shift in my body as my 15 year-old spoke, confided, and sobbed to her older self, the current me. Who else could she talk to who would so know and understand what it was like living in the family? It was also helpful having that child hold a conversation with her mother over an upsetting - and revealing - childhood incident.

This work brought freedom to my soul. It’s not over yet, but it is a huge step towards wholeness, being all that I was created to be and express, and living from my true essence.

I am so very grateful for the loving and wonderful teachers and counselors who are a part of my life these days. Bless them! Most of them I’ve only recently met since moving to Sedona 5½ months ago, but it’s clear that we are not strangers - we are f-a-m-i-l-y. I feel like we are from the same wonderful tribe, helping one another heal and awaken.

So this morning, with a great enthusiasm for life and the people in it, my conversation with God is a simple prayer: Thank You, God - Thank You, God - Thank You, God!

God Break

As I move from eating lunch and washing dishes to working on e-newsletters, I pause to take a God break.

Now, “break” is not the exact word I’d like to use as it implies a split, and I don’t ever want to feel separate from Spirit. But the truth of the matter is my mind is not always staid on Thee. So when I wake up and remember God consciously, I am grateful.

I take this time to breathe deeply, for it is God who breathes me, a wonderful remembrance. And, I thank God for the many blessings in my life. Finally, (it’s never ‘final’) I ask Spirit in prayer that I be energized, creative, and full of joy and peace as I go about the rest of my afternoon and evening. May Its Light shine through me and my work.

Ahhh. Now onward and upward.

Empowering Gratitude

We empower ourselves every time we accept responsibility for choosing the thoughts and feelings we act on. - In God’s Care, February 4, 2010

Thinking about what I am grateful for is a wonderful (and quick) way for me to align with Spirit and thereby empower myself.

So here’s what I’m grateful for this very morning:

- Spending quiet time with God, my Higher Self, guides, angels, and all the other beings interested in my upliftment
- Early morning ’kawfee’ time with Rog in our rustic candlelit living room
- The divine spark within that is growing stronger every day
- My robust health physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually
- My front crown remaining secure and staying on!
- My newfound friend, client, and personal healer
- Interesting clients and creative work
- Money flowing in more steadily
- Unity of Sedona people and events
- An array of friends who are waking up alongside me

And, most of all, my gratitude list must always include knowing and feeling I am never alone, for God is always with me.

Thank You, Spirit, for all You have blessed me with. I look forward to the future blessings You have in store for me.

The Nature of a God Thought

I read a passage from Emmet Fox that was a bit of an astounding concept for me – and most uplifting.

"There is no end to a prayer. It echoes on forever in your soul. Long after the visible demonstration has been made and forgotten, the prayer that produced it continues to work for your spiritual advancement, for the creative power of a God thought is unlimited and eternal."– Power Through Constructive Thinking, Page 109

I can imagine this vast sea of God thoughts all around me and circulating in me, my soul – it’s a bit overwhelming. How powerful prayer is... Now I realize further the importance of prayer and thus have even more reason to pray ceaselessly: so that my spiritual advancement be guaranteed to continue.

Guide Me

Dear Lord, guide me towards Your plan. – Marion Bond West

It’s been quite the roller coaster ride these past several days. We found a lovely home that needed work and the owner was open to us living rent-free while we get it back into shape. I was sort of in shock with the entire unfolding of the situation and in such a state of gratitude and faith that I kept repeating “Oh, my God”, “Oh, my God”, “Oh, my God.”

When we revisited the property and saw that it needed much too much work before we could even store our belongings there, I felt deflated. But soon I pulled myself up and stated “God just has something better for us.” We informed the owner that it was too much of a project to suit us and wished him good luck.

With time appearing to run out to move out of our current home because of an impending trustee sale that had been postponed twice before, we seriously started checking out sharing a house with someone. It would require less cash on our part, which has not yet manifested in sufficiently abundant amounts yet. We found a lovely woman with a lovely house – but we realized we really couldn’t live with someone else. With little money to rent our own place, I feel at a standstill, not knowing what to do. These days I guess you could say I'm feeling a little frustrated.

And the news today is:

I’ve found out that I’m to receive a gift check from some dear relatives. It’ll help us with our first month’s rent and other expenses.

The house trustee sale was postponed yet again, giving us some breathing space even though we need to get settled in our new community.

The owner of the house in need of repairs still seems to want us to consider living there and making renovations. He’s coming in from CA this weekend and it seems like he’s already got some plans to fix things – who knows if he’ll persuade us.

I feel like a yo-yo riding a roller coaster - what is God’s plan for me? I have a vanity license plate that reads GUIDE ME. I specifically chose it so that I could regularly be reminded of where I stand in relation to God. These days I guess you could say I'm feeling a little frustrated.

Dear Spirit – Please guide me towards Your plan about living quarters and keep me open to creative ideas, and patient with the time line. All happens in Your time. Thank You for delaying the trustee sale yet again, so that all the pieces can come together with ease and grace like a beautiful, finely woven tapestry.

Motivation Versus Inspiration

“Inspiration comes forth from within. It's what the light burning within you is about, as opposed to motivation, which is doing it because if you don't do it, there will be negative repercussions. Motivation is making myself do something that I don't really want to do. Inspiration is having the clear picture of what I am wanting -- and letting Universal forces come into play to get the outcome.”

- Abraham (Excerpt from 07/07/99 Spokane, WA workshop)

Hmmm. I’m thinking of some personal examples and, of course, all this admin work I’ve been doing clearly fits. I’m motivated to do this work solely because if I don’t, living in this culture will be a lot more difficult. However, I look forward to this particular work being done, for in the long run, I expect to be able to spend more time on being creative, to be inspired.

The origin of the word inspiration comes from the Latin words in and spirare (breathe), or in other words, to breathe into. I relate this to Spirit (God) breathing into me, in fact, starting with God breathing life into me. My breath is an ever present reminder of God being in me and with me always. And, it shows up in me as a creative being, expressing God always. Art, music, writing, speaking, helping, praying, and on and on it goes. God in me always. Being.

Motivation or inspiration? I’ll take inspiration any time I can!

Affirming Prosperity

On the occasion of us signing bankruptcy documents this afternoon, I affirm:

My thoughts are enriched by the creative spirit of God within me. I am filled with renewed enthusiasm, and my life is prospered.

I am a spiritual being, heir to the abundance of God’s kingdom. My life is prospered and enriched.

I give thanks for God’s prospering ideas that inspire me to live a full, rewarding life.

I am God’s beloved creation, and I rely on God’s provision to fulfill every good desire.

The presence of God is within and around me. I am alive with creative energy, awake to prospering ideas, and open to unlimited goodness.

A Bouquet of Blessings

We’ve recently been asking people for help, offering some suggestions as to the form it might take.

One idea was if they knew of a house situation in northern Arizona where we could barter our talents and services for rent. Another was to contribute to our Move Fund. And, the 3rd was to keep us in their thoughts and prayers.

One of my friends came up with another, this one a lead for some unusual -for us- paid contract work. With this Sunday being Mother’s Day, the florist where she works was looking for drivers to make flower deliveries; 800 orders are already in! The pay is per arrangement delivered and we could conceivably earn enough in one day that would be the equivalent of more than a month’s worth of groceries (no, the florist is not paying the equivalent of a bank CEO’s bonus – we’ve just really cut down on expenses!).

It’s appealing to us not just for the money but for a myriad of reasons: Rog and I love flowers, we can spend time together, work as a team (which we do so well), and be messengers of sheer joy as we light up people’s day with flowers and wishing them “Happy Mother’s Day!”

We’ve noticed that with our current financial condition of having less money, we’re actually enjoying it more. We’ve gotten very creative in how we spend our dollars, design our meals, trade goods and services, and now in spreading joy. What a blessing!

Giving

As I go through The Move Project of 2009, it is unlike any other, in terms of the circumstances around it and the current apparent lack of financial resources.

It has forced me to be very creative and open to unlimited possibilities. It has stretched me in my being humble and in my capacity to ask for help. It has me spending more time with Spirit as I ask for guidance, pray, and meditate. The aforementioned are all gifts and blessings, ones which make me feel grateful.

New, like-minded people and opportunities have come into my life, and they too make me feel grateful. I’ve been the recipient of many gifts and kindnesses lately as I have put myself more into the world going about this Move Project.

Today’s reading from the Daily Word strikes me so directly as I sit here at the keyboard in a friend’s home in Verde Valley country, the location of our future hometown. Here it is:

I give, and I am greatly blessed in return.

I may have received help from friends, family, or even strangers at a time I needed assistance. I give thanks that they have been there for me and for others.

I, too, am open to giving to those who need help in everyday and unusual circumstances. Whether someone needs a ride to the doctor, a sitter for a child, or a meal at the end of a pay period, my inner guidance reveals what and how I am to give.

The wondrous, miraculous gift from this experience is that I cannot give without receiving in turn--much more than I have given. As I acknowledge and appreciate the dedication of others to be of service, I myself am encouraged to give. I offer what I have of my time, talents, and skills.

Spring

Spring and rebirth are definitely on my mind today.

I spent quite a bit of time searching for the right photo banner of spring flowers to insert in our upcoming e-newsletter that when I next looked out the dining room window I appreciated the scenery more than usual. My eyes took in the view of our lush palo verde tree, large, delicate pink roses, vibrant violet ruellia, and expansive torch bouganvilla. With birds chirping in the background, my heart swelled. This beauty points to God.

Today, the weather has varied from chilly to warm, calm to windy, sunny to cloudy. Like this spring weather, we feel excitement and expectancy, yet mystery about us.

As Rog and I grow our businesses that allow us to be creative and of service to others, meet like-minded people, prepare for our move north, and appreciate our time together, we follow the guidance of Spirit, not really knowing what will unfold. These are exciting times we are living in and we are up for the adventure!

Spring is my favorite season of the year. It’s about rebirth... possibilities... life... God.

Unique Meditation

I sat in the silence this morning once again breathing in faith and breathing out peace.

When Rog and I met up for our second embrace of the day, our lips rested on one another’s and lingered. That’s when I got the idea that I could continue my mantra. So with each breath in and each breath out, I silently said “faith” then “peace” as our lips continued to cling. In the embrace of Rog and God, I was surrounded by love and at peace.

There are many ways to meditate and connect with Spirit. I smile as I think of this particularly creative one and know that wherever I am, God is, and all is well.

The Can

I didn’t get everything on today’s ‘To Do’ list done. However, I did finish creating our manifestation can, which Rog and I both ‘got’ from Spirit that it was a high priority to complete today. A cash dollar amount for the month was set with Spirit’s guidance and we’ve now created a container to catch the prosperity and abundance that is ours by divine right.

This can is decorated with a colorful collage of graphics and words, all upbeat and meaningful to us. There are images of items such as: dogs, flowers, birds, lotus hands, hearts, and even us! Quotes include: “God is my supply.” and “Money is God in manifestation...”, and concepts like Trust, Service, Gratitude, Faith, and Love.

I enjoyed my arts and crafts session, a chance to be creative - much else on today’s list was not anywhere near as inspiring and joyful! I had a delightful time, especially knowing this activity was Spirit-directed and God was surely near.

Now to see what manifests and how – God’s work!

Fit Condition

Rog and I just got back from a walk after having dinner. It’s barely March, but it’s a beautiful 80 degrees and spring is in the air – that’s why folks live here in the Valley of the Sun and put up with the 115-degree summers!

This week I’ve gotten more physical exercise than usual – which anything is ‘more’ since generally what I get is the walk from the living room to my office, to the kitchen, and back again. We spent some of our anniversary day walking on Murphy Bridle Path in northern Phoenix, and now tonight I was the one who suggested an evening constitutional walk.

I like my exercise to be part of some other activity and to be fun. I just don’t like spending time on my body – I’d rather be focused on my spiritual practice, creative work, reading, etc. I take pretty good care of my body, and it serves me well - and there is certainly room for improvement. I know that energy could be flowing better through this vehicle.

If I am to be of service, I need to be not only in fit spiritual condition, but also in fit physical condition.

My Work of Art

"In a sense, as we are creative beings, our lives become our work of art." – The Artist’s Way (by Julia Cameron, page xvi)

Hmmm. Yes, my life is a work of art. I would characterize it as a colorful work of art. I have led, excuse me – created – an interesting life over the years. Here are some highlights, meaningful, wide brush strokes with many details no doubt accompanying them on the canvas:

. Majored in philosophy and sociology in college
. Worked for a railroad
. Switched career from the transportation industry to the financial one
. Joined a 12 Step program at age 35
. Became greatly involved in volunteer work
. Left corporate world to work on graduate studies full-time
. Earned Master of Social Work degree
. Relocated from NY, my lifelong home town and city of 8 million people, to the 4,000 population southwest town of Taos, NM – solo at the age of 41
. Employed by Native Americans to help their pueblo community
. Launched my own business as The Computer Therapist, combining my geek skills with my therapeutic skills
. Met and married (first time) my twin flame – Rog – at close to 50 years of age
. My three best friends attended our wedding
. Have a dynamic partnership with my husband in our personal relationship, spiritual life, and our business.

But really, how much of my life did I consciously create? It is only since I started waking up spiritually, commencing with joining the 12 Step program, and coming to believe in God, that I feel I was creating what I wanted, no longer drifting aimlessly and without guidance.

My life – my relationships, my work – has been so much richer, so much more creative, since I started waking up and forging a relationship with Spirit. And after all, that’s no surprise since Spirit and creativity are intimately intertwined.
