I’ve been pushing myself to meet deadlines, participate in spiritually-focused events, attend to ADL’s (activities of daily living), and fulfill other commitments. And, I’m beat. It’s not really fun pushing, pushing, pushing. I just can’t do it all... something has to give... I need to let go.
Yes, I’m exhausted physically, and beat emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. I need to let go of controlling finances, time, people... As if I could really control anything or anyone!
So I surrender to that Divine Wisdom that knows all is in perfect order... to the Source that created me happy, joyous, and free - not tied to deadlines and obligations.
In cramming and striving to meet deadlines, I’m cramming The Presence too. It’s difficult to feel peace and joy when my entire being feels contracted and squished. So I pause, breathe, and give my trust to Spirit. I release my concerns to God and I am at peace.
All I have is this moment... Despite my planning and scheduling, when it comes down to it, all I have is Now. I can sketch in the pieces of my life, but I must remain flexible and open to the idea that things don’t unfold in Joyce’s time. I must surrender.
Dear Beloved, Holy Presence-
Thank You, thank You, thank You for the pause and the breath that refresh me to then move on to carry out Your plan.

Let It Be
Yesterday I attended a talk given by Timothy Buzzard of Unity of Sedona. If I got it right, the crux of his message was that no one is in a position to judge. Any person or situation can provide profound usefulness in the midst of seeming discomfort and even horror, so why judge it?
If I believe there is a Divine Intelligence at work, then everything, everything, everything - and everyone - is here for a reason. I may not know what it is, but I can rest assured that there is purpose behind it all.
From that viewpoint, I endeavor to see the blessing in everything and everyone. I surrender into Spirit’s wisdom and love, and I just let things and people be. I do not judge lest I be judge - and there is simply no point in judging, it is moot.
In my earlier days of awakening, I never fully appreciated some of John Lennon’s songs, the lyrics as well as the music. It is only in recent years that I’ve realized the depth of and enjoyed the powerful spiritual meaning behind his “Imagine.” And yesterday, I came to see the same when Timothy played a gospel version of “Let It Be.”
With God in charge, I can simply let things be.
“Let It Be” by John Lennon and Paul McCartney
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be. Yeah
There will be an answer, let it be.
And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be,

Plans
From time to time throughout my lifetime - especially when my ego was comparing me to other people - I would regret that I had not consciously planned out my life. You know, like the boy in 3rd grade who just knew he wanted to be a doctor and was preparing for med school at age 8. Or, the young lady in junior high who was already singing in musical theatre.
I received little guidance from my parents about this game called life, and simultaneously there did not seem to be any great specific desires inside me to stir me up.
Sure, I knew that I wanted to go to college despite my parents never asking me what I was going to do with my life after high school. And, I had this great yearning for what I would now call my twin flame. I seemed to have mini-plans but nothing that tied them all together.
When I entered the 12 Step program twenty years ago I heard many slogans to assist me from ‘picking up’ and to live life on life’s terms. One of these was “Failing to plan is planning to fail;” I have to say I was never quite comfortable with that one. Perhaps I felt it a bit contra to other ideas like God has a plan for me and more will be revealed, etc. And, then there’s the joke “How do you make God laugh? Tell Him you plans!”
On my journey I’ve embraced the notion that I’m a powerful being and co-create my life, and I’ve embraced I’m powerless and God is in charge. Well, which is it?
These days I once again am back to the idea that God has a plan for me and there’s really not much I can do about it. I do not find that aversive because the God of my understanding is total Love, Goodness, Grace, Joy, etc., so Its plan for me can only have such qualities as well. And, this is actually a relief. I can surrender and rest in Spirit’s most loving and competent hands and know that all is well. And, of course, it’s my choice to have an attitude of gratitude even when I can’t see the blessings in the darkness.
Yes, I am powerful, but only because that power comes through from Source. And, Source indeed has a divine plan for me.
Having learned about living in the Now, as I reflect back on my childhood so many years ago, perhaps I was a bit more ‘together’ than I give myself credit for. Just maybe I didn’t make a conscious plan for my life because I was simply living in the present moment, letting my life unfold according to the plan of an Unseen Power. And, my life was exactly how God planned it.

Prosperity
“True prosperity is about spiritual wealth. It's about knowing that my true source is not my employer, my partner or my parent. God is the source of my greatest good.
“When I am aware of the ever-flowing wisdom and grace of God's spirit, I cannot help but create prosperity in all areas of my life--in my relationships, my health, my wealth. As I focus on the Truth, abundance flows. I am rich in all ways, and I am grateful.” – Excerpt from Daily Word, Tuesday, 02.16.10
Once again it is written that God is to be the focus of my life. And why not?! If Spirit is the One Source and One Presence, surely It is worthy of my attention! More specifically, I am really nothing without God - literally, God breathes life into me.
When I keep my thoughts staid on Thee, life flows and, with it, abundance. Prosperity shows up in many forms. I must remain open to receiving God’s blessings, I must surrender my ego at the door.
May I keep my thoughts staid on Thee as I walk through this day of distractions of all sorts, which are ego’s attempts at keeping me separate from You and my fellows. Regardless of appearances, You are my Source and prosperity abounds. Thank You, thank You, thank You. And, so it is.

Relinquishment
I was reminded about trusting Spirit in an article by Catherine Marshall about the Law of Relinquishment, in essence, acceptance and surrender.
She says that "not even the Master Shepherd can lead if the sheep have not trust and insist on running ahead of Him or taking side paths or just stubbornly refusing to follow Him." How true - how can God help me if I have not trust in Him? The self-will must be given over to God.
“The Prayer of Relinquishment... does not let us lie down in the dust of a godless universe and steel ourselves just for the worst. Rather it says: "This is my situation at the moment. I'll face the reality of it. But I'll also accept willingly whatever a loving Father sends." Acceptance therefore never slams the door on hope.”
And for sure, getting into fear about a situation doesn’t help. “Fear is like a screen erected between us and God, so that His power cannot get through to us.” When we relinquish fear, God and His power - the supreme reality - fear evaporates. Once again, I’m either living in fear or I’m living in faith.
Dear Spirit -
You are my Source, my loving, all powerful Father. May I trust in You in all things, relinquishing my ego so that I may align with Your will, do Your good works, and dwell in peace.

Surrender Once Again...
"To share in the knowledge of God requires that you surrender what you think and what you know so that you can open and receive the infinite awareness that you are part of. Surrender in this moment, and in this moment, and in this moment, and continue to do so until your mind is filled with the awareness of God's love and wisdom that is within you." – www.thevoiceforlove.com
In surrendering, I feel closer to God and at peace. I am relaxed and hence more open -minded and -hearted, more able to hear God’s guidance. And, I am more willing to follow Spirit’s guidance. There too I feel joy.
Lately I’ve been overwhelmed with stuff related to the physical world and not feeling the joy that is in inherent in me, that is my divine birthright. In seeking to feel the joy within me, I surrender my will and my life to Spirit - again and again and again...

Forgiving Me
I don’t think my plate has ever been as full as it is now as we continue transitioning from life in Gilbert to life in Sedona. And because of that, certain tasks have gone by the wayside or not been addressed in a timely manner or not been done as perfectly as I (and perhaps others) think they should have been.
It’s time for forgiving – me, moi, Joyce. I’m doing the best I can in each 24-hour period given to me and it must be enough. In fact, it’s better than enough.
I don’t think Spirit has me here to act like a machine. I am here to learn, to grow, to help others, to serve, to be happy. I want to find the joy in this day, and I want to be in the Now to feel the Presence.
The other day at a blessing gathering I got the hit that forgiveness is about surrender. I surrender to God the ideas I hold about myself and others, how things should be, and let go. I let God handle my actions and my thoughts. I surrender my heart to God as I forgive myself and others.
Today I am filled with peace as I choose to forgive myself and surrender my life to Spirit. Thank You, Spirit!

Struggle Versus Peace
“Whatever gives you a sense of struggle and strife is false. Whatever gives you a sense of peace is right.” – Open Your Mind to Receive by Catherine Ponder, page 75.
The above quote is a remarkable and easy tool to use to gauge how I am living my life.
When I feel peaceful about a situation, I know I am doing God’s will; I am following the right path. When I am unsettled, trying to control people and situations, up to my eyeballs in struggle, I am in ego and out of sync with God. I am immersed in illusion and falsehood.
This morning I felt the ‘To Do’s’ and future concerns that have been piling up and which I’d been struggling with fall into a heap of surrender. And, I felt peace. I’m done with struggle and strife.
Dear Spirit –
Give me peace, I pray. When struggle and strife arise, please awaken me and have me surrender once again into Your peaceful, loving, caring arms. Please keep me in this state of surrender, staying focused in the Now and what You would have me do. Thank You, God. So it is.

A Long Day In Coming
Today was the big day Rog and I have been striving toward for about the past 14 months: starting a new life, settling in a small town in Northern Arizona, living closer to Nature and in community. We did it!
Well, actually, God did it. We moved into a house that has tremendous character, one that hadn’t even been for rent! Financial prosperity has been growing, meaningful friendships blossoming, etc.
The only difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is the way in which we use them. — Anonymous
Yes, we had a lot of obstacles to overcome but we chose to use them as stepping stones to grow closer to Spirit. We leaned on God - trusting, having faith, and surrendering. I didn’t do it perfectly, but I have absolutely no doubt that God was with us, guiding us, laying out the plan for us. I am so grateful.
Dear God –
Thank You for showering Your love on me, and the myriad of ways Your blessings create a rich life.

Surrendering Once Again
This morning as I lay in bed, I started feeling anxious, which hasn’t happened in a while. It revolved around how I could start my new part-time position in Sedona on Monday when we haven’t a new place to call home yet. I was definitely experiencing a lack of faith and trust. How could God not provide a place for me to live when He so smoothly dropped this business opportunity into my lap?
So after sitting in the Silence (as best as possible), yet another morning reading focused on surrendering to God – think there’s a message here?!
“We wear ourselves out trying to control the uncontrollable, while God patiently waits to receive our burdens. All we need to do is hand them over: God’s presence is here, now.
“When we surrender all our concerns to God – both our failures and our successes – we begin to realize the breadth of God’s care and the constancy of God’s presence in our life. We have always been close to God, as close as our breath.
“Learning to acknowledge God as our protector and guide is exhilarating and eases our every step, thought, plan, and dream. We are learning that we can do nothing alone, but we can do anything if we just let God join us in partnership.
“I have God as my companion always. I’ll remember that today and be at ease.” – In God’s Care, October 30
Soon afterwards I had an email from a friend who lives a couple of towns over from Sedona offering me her place to stay short term if need be.
As Rog said this evening several times, miracles have been raining upon us. Sometimes I feel like it would be a miracle if I would surrender once and for all.
Dear Spirit;
Thank You for all the blessings and miracles you shower upon me even when I lose faith and attempt to control and figure things out. I acknowledge You as my Source, and, once again, I surrender.

The Way Things Are
The way we think everything should and will happen just may not be according to God’s will of good for us. – Anonymous
There is no doubt that there have been numerous instances in my life in which I thought things should have happened in a certain way in order to be in my best interest. But more was revealed, and the way the situation unfolded turned out to be a blessing and clearly for my spiritual upliftment.
These days I’m really not clear why the unfoldment of my new life is happening the way it is, and I just want to get on with it! But I am grateful for the reminders that come my way via a person, a reading, etc. showing me that there is a Divine Plan, God is in charge, and all is unfolding perfectly.
I pray to keep surrendering to Spirit’s Plan and relax in the peace, love and joy of it.

Surrender - Again
“... turmoil... would disappear if we comfortably relied on God to take charge of our life every moment... willingness to let God have total charge of our life. If we do, we will know a new peacefulness – immediately.
I will let God be in total charge of my life today. I’ll not be controlled by fear. God will smooth my way.” – In God’s Care, October 26
Yesterday’s house hunting expedition in Sedona held many lessons. I had been praying my butt off, had friends praying for us, and I had signed up on about five prayer sites for strangers to pray for me. So what was the prayer I was asking help with? That we find and secure our perfect home in Sedona with ease and grace in a perfect way TODAY. I felt we had to find it TODAY, because I have a position starting in a week there and we’ve no place yet to call home.
We didn’t leave Sedona yesterday consciously having our new home, and maybe one of the ones we drove by is it. But it doesn’t matter.
I realized that I had once again been trying to control things, that I had expectations (not just expectancy) that set me up for disappointment, that my ego was having a grand ‘ol time. We’d done all the footwork and though I thought I’d been leaving the results up to Spirit, I wasn’t. Finally, when tired and frustrated, I had had it, and I hit bottom and surrendered. There I found peace, and I relaxed.
It was a painful reminder again of the need to really surrender and let God unfold His Divine Plan, to let God be in charge of my life, not just in this matter, but in everything. I am not in charge, my way doesn’t work. I can set my intention and express my desire, but ultimately God will work things out that are best for me. I must trust – and let go fully.
As we go house hunting again tomorrow, I go with expectancy and hope. But if we don’t secure the place, I know that’s God’s plan, that the time is just not right, that all the pieces are not quite in place - and I’m fine with that. Come next Monday, when my new position starts in Sedona, God will have worked out a perfect plan for me. I might not know what it is now, but God does. God has been preparing me beautifully along the way and will continue to do so. I surrender to God, my Creator, my Source.

Focusing on God Within
“The fundamental purpose of prayer, including the prayer of petition, is not to get something from God, or to change God, but to change ourselves. We pray in order to give ourselves to God.” - Fr. Thomas Keating, The Heart of the World, Contemplative Outreach News, Winter 1997
Last night I attended a 11th Step Centering Prayer meeting and was reintroduced to the work of Thomas Keating. Fr. Keating was one of the developers of Centering Prayer, and a central figure in the initiation of the Centering Prayer movement.
Centering Prayer doesn’t depend on theological dogmas, which is great because otherwise I’d not be interested in it personally. It embraces the idea that God is both separate of us and imminent within us, and it is the latter that you focus on during your 20” prayer time.
A benefit of focusing on God within is that it enables God to bring our psychological problems to the surface and release them over time. One surrenders all thoughts and images to rest in a loving and abiding presence of God. A sacred word is used as an anchor of intent to return us to our consent of accepting the Divine Presence when we get stuck in our thoughts. Centering Prayer is about dialogue with God and trusting and resting in His love and presence. This idea alone brings me a sense of comfort and peace.
It seems that I practice something like Centering Prayer and something like Vipassana in my current times of silence, but not quite. This time has been less than satisfying in my yearning to feel more connected to Spirit. I’m excited about learning more about this way of cultivating a deeper relationship with God, and practicing it. And, since, not unexpectedly it appeals to numerous individuals in 12 Step recovery, I’m also excited about connecting with my 12 Step family in a deeper way.

Enlightenment
This morning, during coffee vacation with Rog, my ego got off into expressing itself, venting frustration, fear, and who knows what else. I certainly wasn’t in my right mind as I thought about my current life and what was going on in it, or for that matter, what was not going on it. I was far from being in the mode of acceptance, surrender or joy. I was in a hissy fit.
And so I had to chuckle when I listened to an audio file Rog had sent my way last night. In it, the speaker told the following story.
Edgar Cayce was asked “What is it to be enlightened?” He said, “Prior to enlightenment you would chop wood, build fire, and carry water. Then after enlightenment you would chop wood, build fire, and carry water. The only difference after enlightenment is you would enjoy the process.”
Well I certainly wasn’t thinking in an enlightened manner this morning when my ego took over. I may not always be a happy camper enjoying the process that my life is in the middle of these days. However, if I would ‘just’ stay focused in the Now, on God, I might be enlightened for the moment (my ego would lighten up). And, there I would find peace.

A Time to Rest
“To everything turn, turn, turn...” – From the song “Turn, Turn, Turn” by Pete Seeger (1954) adapted from the book of Ecclesiastes.
This song comes to mind for today. I have little physical energy, clarity of mind, or enthusiasm. In the past, I would have bulldozed my way to be active and productive. Now, I surrender to Spirit Who knows that I need to rest. I have no choice but to listen to Spirit.
I am grateful that I do not have a j-o-b I had to get to. Being in my own business, I make my own schedule, and it allows for supreme flexibility.
It is a loving action on my part to take time to rest; it is trusting action for me to surrender to God, knowing there is a time for everything. Today is a time for rest.

Question Session
Rog and I are really feeling stuck. We simply do not know what God’s plan is for us. We go about our day with plenty of work of various sorts keeping us busy and fulfilled to varying degrees. But we know much of it is not our true work. Still, we don’t know for sure what Spirit would like us to be doing. And, we continue to be eager to move to a smaller, more rural community and start what we think to be our new life.
So last night together we sat in the Silence seeking answers from Spirit enveloped by soft candlelight, holding hands. Each time I awoke in the middle of the night, I had on my mind “Sprit, please tell me what You want, what Your plans are for me, for us...”
And, this morning, my alone time had me asking Spirit question-after-question about what Its Will for me and for us is. This is something I’ve not seemed to have done in a very long time. Usually I am easing the chatter for messages to come through or I’m sending messages out in a variety of modalities (prayer, affirmation). This time I was seeking a dialogue, you know, a là Neal Donald Walsch (of “Conversations with God” fame).
I got some replies back to my questions. I’m not sure if they came from Spirit or from Ego. I tend to think that they came from Spirit because I think Ego would have come up with some more appealing and dramatic ones.
At this time, I believe Spirit wants me to be patient, to continue growing closer to God, to increase my capacity to ask and then do Thy Will, not mine. It’s about surrender, it’s about trust. It’s about just Being and being in the Now.
I’ll keep on asking and talking with God, knowing that more will be revealed of the Divine Plan when the time is correct. For today, this rests well with me and I am at peace.

Trust God
“Trust God or worry. Those are the two choices you have in every situation. Trust God and be at peace. Worry and experience stress. Your choices are that simple and you will make your life as peaceful or stressful as you choose to make it. Trust God and be at peace. This is all that is asked of you.”
- James Blanchard Cisneros
Well, I clearly was feeling worried, stressed, and not at peace. I was still in the research stage in a project, not knowing how long it was going to take me to actually start designing the project, and concerned about keeping my commitment to agreed upon goal dates with my client. Ego had clearly ‘eased God out’ and I was a wreck. Impatient with Rog, impatient with myself, with my body all tensed up.
I took some steps to help myself calm down, one in the form of checking in with my client and communicating my concerns. But I didn’t pause to check in with Spirit. I didn’t stop and say “God needs to be first, then all else will follow with ease and grace.”
Still, somehow God got through to me. I realized that I was doing everything I could and it was going to have to be enough. My peace was too important to keep on keeping on in this unhealthy, workaholic type of state, with ego having a field day. I surrendered. I was backing to trusting God.
Thank You, Spirit, for getting through to me even when I feel so closed and bound up.

The Sea of God
I am swimming in the sea of God. That came to me during my morning practice. God is all around me and I am submerged in Godness. As far as the naked eye can see, there is only Godness.
How about I’m ‘treading’ in the sea of God? I’m taking action, doing the work, but staying in one place, getting nowhere.
Well, how about I’m ‘floating’ in the sea of God? I’m letting God carry me. I’ve surrendered and I’m relaxing in peace. In the sea of God. Ah...

My Blocks
If I am in full alignment with God, then I am at peace and in a state of joy. And then, God is ALL that matters. It’s bliss. Nothing going on in the external matters in the least bit. In fact, it barely exists as I am so enveloped by God and His Love. This wholeness, this completeness is what I strive for but let it be known that this blissful state is not a continuing or even very regular occurrence for me. It pains me to say this but even more so, it pains me that it’s not my everyday existence.
When I’m not in total alignment with God, it means my ego is interfering. Then, my wholeness and Oneness can not be. It’s like this wonderful cocoon filled with God has a tear in it and that one tear acts like a rotten apple that spoils the entire barrel.
Obviously, there are blocks to my actualizing wholeness and Oneness with Spirit. The stronger my ego is, the more splintered is my peace and joy.
So what is it that gets my ego to start acting up, to break my peace? Ya know, often it just seems to come out of the blue, with no trigger. I know that, in part, it is due to my not being loyal to my soul, that is, not giving it the nourishment and attention it needs, i.e., sacred time and space. But, it’s more than that.
If I could just find out what that switch is that turns me from moving towards God to veering away... What is it inside me that does not want to fully bask in the “Sunlight of the Spirit”? What happened in my childhood? What ‘thing’ has festered in me over the years in this lifetime (or perhaps another one) to keep me from fully being aligned with God and at peace? This includes: being all that I can be, right thinking, perfect self expression, giving in service, receiving my good, enjoying rich relationships – all the gifts that God wants me to have in His Kingdom on earth, now.
Well, I think I’ve got the solution to this problem. Instead of me trying to figure out what is the piece in this puzzle that keeps me from my Oneness with God, I will ask God for help. I will ask God to shine the light on what it is I need to know and heal it. And, I will ask God to heal that which I do not need to know or understand, and for me to be okay with not knowing. I will ask God to pluck it out, do the surgery, and heal me once and for all.
Yes, with God all things are possible. Away with the old of having to analyze and to know, and in with the new of going to God for help and letting Him handle things. I cast the burden. I surrender.
Dear God –
Please remove all obstacles within my being that keep me from my good and from realizing You fully. Where it is helpful to You for me to know causes and experiences, then provide me with that knowledge. And, where no understanding is needed on my part, simply heal me and make my way clear. Thus may I reside in Your Kingdom now, and, being in alignment with You, may I be of help to others. Thank You. So it is.

Evening Prayer
Evening Prayer
By Chris Celine
Divine Light,
Mother-Father God ~~
I surrender to You this day.
I give everything about this day into the Blessed Arms of Love.
I forgive myself for any mistaken ideas and painful images I have made.
I willingly accept the healing Grace of True Love.
Where I forgot the truth of my beloved self,
Where I forgot the truth of my beloveds,
I open my heart and mind
And accept the healing of my limited made-up past.
I am so willing, Dear God, to be healed as I sleep.
I am willing to begin again.
I place tomorrow in Your hands.
I am willing to wake up and experience a happy dream,
A new day,
A new opportunity to remember Love.
Amen.
